Replacing Your Water Heater? Consider Going Tankless

tankless-water-heaterThis time of year, homeowners are starting to think about their air conditioning systems more and more. Sure, it’s spring in Vermont, and that means that the weather hasn’t been hot—or even particularly warm. That will change, though, and the anticipation of that change is part of why people are getting so AC-focused. Don’t overlook those other systems in your home that need your attention. Specifically, we’re talking about your water heater.

If you are ready to replace an old water heater with a newer, more efficient model, or if you’re moving into a brand new home this summer and need to figure out which appliance is right for you, give us a call. Our plumbers in Walpole, VT, are some of the finest in the business, and we’ll make sure that you have what you need. You might just decide that the tankless water heater is the answer you’ve been looking for.

Wait—Tankless? Then Where’s All the Water?

In the pipes, waiting for you to call for it. Tankless water heaters are also called “on-demand” water heaters, because they heat only the water that you need, as you need it, in an on-demand fashion. This completely eliminates the need for a water storage tank. When you call for water, the cold water passes through the tankless water heater. It is heated as it passes through, and delivered to the point of use fixture or appliance that needs it.

What’s the Benefit of This?

It’s not a matter of a benefit, but multiple benefits.

First of all, tankless water heaters take up a whole lot less space than tank water heaters do. If you want to make better use of limited storage space in your home, installing a tankless water heater in a small closet, right on the wall, is a great way to do so.

Additionally, because the storage tank is out of the picture, so too is the issue of standby energy loss. While modern water heater tanks are very efficient, some heat is still bound to transfer through them into the air outside. When that happens, the water heater basically has to reheat water that has lost some thermal energy. That drives up energy costs, and the issue is eliminated completely with the elimination of the need for storing water.

Yes, the Price Tag Is Higher

If you start looking at your options, you’ll notice that a tankless water heater is substantially more expensive than standard tank models are. Don’t let that cost immediately dissuade you from making the investment, though. Remember, you’re looking at greater energy efficiency levels than you would be if you were using a tank model. Also, keep in mind the fact that tankless water heaters last much longer than tank models do.

If you’re going to be in your home for some time to come, a tankless water heater is definitely a long term investment that can make a serious return over time. These systems can last over 20 years when properly installed and serviced!
